What support can Barrowby CE Primary School Offer?

We recognise that making a decision about whether or not your child should sit the 11+ test can be a difficult decision for parents. If you wish to talk to the Class teacher or the Head teacher please feel free to make an appointment, no matter which year group your child is currently in.

It should be made clear that the school does not teach children to pass the 11+ test, but tries to ensure all pupils irrespective of ability or gender achieve their potential. NFER advise that additional preparation is unnecessary and may be unhelpful.

We do however, recognise that children need to be allowed time to become familiar with the unusual style of the tests and may need some support in this area. Our school offers support to children, when they enter Year 5, including:

  • an information evening for parents, early in September
  • a series of 11+ sessions, focussed on developing logical thinking skills, delivered by the headteacher, starting in the Spring Term
  • an end of year Parental Consultation, early in July

Children who attend will be given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the content of the 11+, developing further logical reasoning.  The results will be communicated to parents, during the Summer Term, through the Parental Consultations for individual children.

This can also help a parent determine whether the 11+ is the right decision for their child. It is perfectly acceptable to register for the tests and then change your mind later on, but you will not be allowed to register late.
