Quadruple Gold Award

Throughout 2018-19, sport continues to be a high priority for our school.  As a Healthy school with enhanced status, we continually seek ways to promote active and healthy lifestyles for all our children both within school and beyond.

As a result of this drive, earlier in the Summer term, Mrs Banfield applied for and the school was awarded the School Games-Gold Mark which recognises and celebrates the quality and range of competitive and extra-curricular sport, available, at our school, for all our children; for the 4th consecutive year.

2018-2019 has been another ‘golden year’ for us.  Our school’s Sport’s Committee organised, with the support of Mrs Banfield, 12 intra-school competitions.  These opportunities encourage all our children, irrespective of age or gender to engage and compete in a range of fun and active competitions-giving all our children the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.

Events included a series of House Swimming Championships; the Key Stage 1 House Cricket Tournament; the Key Stage 2 House Rounder’s Tournament, our annual Sports Day and a series of ‘Personal Best + 1 Challenges’ including: Paralympic Values, a Mass Mile Participation event as well as a ‘heart healthy’ obstacle course.

We also participated in 16 inter-school competitions, where many of our children represented our school, in various teams competing with other children from the local or the regional area.  This covered a wide range of sport competitions including Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Swimming and the annual Mini-Olympics event.

As a school we continue to, “strive for excellence” in all that we do.  This year, 7 of our school teams (the same as last year) were ranked in the top 3 in district level competition:

  • 1st - Large School Swimming Gala (1st place for 5 consecutive years);
  • 1st - Large School Swimming Relay
  • 1st – Mini Olympics
  • 2nd – County Swimming Finals
  • 2nd- Y5 & 6 Cross Country Running
  • 3rd – High 5 Netball – League 2
  • 3rd -Y5 & 6 Cross Country Running

Through an extensive program of activities, available both within and outside of our curriculum, we are committed to encouraging our pupils to lead healthy and active lives.

This year, we employed 4 sport coaches across a range of sporting activities who worked alongside our pupils, supporting them to develop their skills and fostering further ‘their love of sport.’

As well as this, we organised 28 sport related extra-curricular clubs or activities across the year for our children to enjoy:

  • In Autumn term 2018, we offered 7 sport related clubs.
  • In Spring 2019, we offered 8 sport related clubs.
  • In Summer 2019, we offered, 12 Sport related clubs/activities.

Throughout 2018-2019, Pupil Leadership has continued to be a priority for us, encouraging even more pupils to ‘take the lead,’ sharing their passion and skills, inspiring others in a range of sport. Leadership opportunities have included:

Playground Leaders:

Children take responsibility for organising a range of lunchtime sport related activities for the younger children to enjoy.

  • 32 x Y6            (100% of class)
  • 32 x Y5            (100% of class)

Club Leader:

Children liaise with the Headteacher to identify the club they wish to organise.  They then plan a 6-week series of activity and take full responsibility for the facilitation of the sport related club/activity including: resourcing; registration of pupils; rewarding positive contributions and supporting sport development.

  • 34 x Y6-100% of class;
  • 34 x Y5-100% of class;
  • 3 x Y4-5% of class;

This means that, across 2018-2019:

  • 45% of pupils have acted as a Club Leader and led sport related activities/clubs;
  • 42% of pupils acted as Playground Leaders and led Sport related activities/clubs; and
  • 45% of pupils have acted as either a Playground Leader and Club Leader and led sport related activities/clubs, across the whole year.

At Barrowby CE Primary School, we are committed to encouraging all our pupils to lead full and active lives, both within school and beyond and are delighted to have been awarded the Gold, in the School Games Mark for a 4th consecutive year as well as the Gold Youth Sport Trust Quality Mark, last Autumn.

We are delighted, to once again, be nationally recognised for the quality and range of our competitive and extra-curricular sport and hope to continue our journey towards the Platinum Award, at the end of this year.

Thank you to everyone: school staff, our pupil and playground leaders, specialist sport coaches and parents for guiding, supporting and inspiring all our children to shine!  Go ‘Team Barrowby!’
