Timeline of School Events

Before 1833 – Early Village Education

  • Education provided informally by the vicar to boys whose families could pay fees.
  • Some girls may have attended a small private school, though no records survive.

1833 – State Education Begins

  • The 1833 Education Act provides public funding for parish church schools.
  • Barrowby participates in the scheme.

1842 – First Schoolmaster Recorded

  • James Taylor listed as schoolmaster in White’s Directory.

1852 – New School Building

  • A “handsome school-house” is erected by the rector and others, on land donated by the Duke of Devonshire.

1855–1863 – Early Staff Team

  • School staffed by Charles Goodson, Miss Elizabeth Golding and Miss Goodson.
  • 1863: Goodson and Golding retire; Mr Croft and Mr & Mrs Ryall are appointed

1856 – Church vs Wesleyan Dispute

  • Rev. Welby attempts to charge Wesleyan families for school attendance.
  • Dispute reported in the Grantham Journal; reveals friction between Church and Non‑Conformists.

1871 – Infant Space Added

  • Additional accommodation created for infant pupils.

1872 – New Infant School + New Headteacher

  • A new infant school is recorded.
  • John Hubbard becomes headmaster.

1876 – Leadership Changes

  • Richard Grandige becomes headmaster.
  • His wife Charlotte Grandige joins the staff.

1880 – Long‑Serving Head Arrives

  • G. F. Potter appointed; serves for 30 years.

1882 – Funding Noted

  • White’s Directory states that “part of the money came from the sale of some old houses” to fund school buildings.

1891 – Major Enlargement

  • Main school building enlarged at a cost of £317.

1910 – New Headteacher: Mr Atkins

  • George Lewis Atkins succeeds Potter.
  • World War 1: School Log Book: 16th October 1916-Mr G.L. Atkins ceased work this evening, having joined H.M. Forces to fight. He resumed duties on 7th April 1919.

1912 – Further Extension

  • New building work carried out by Rudds of Grantham.
  • Children given an extra week’s holiday while construction is completed.

1913–1922 – Growing School Population

  • Attendance rises to 135 pupils by 1913 and remains steady into the 1920s.

1942 – Leadership Change, new Headteacher: Mr Atkins

  • Mr Thornton becomes headteacher after Atkins’ long tenure ends.
  • Number on roll 87.

1972 – End of an Era

  • Mr Thornton retires after 30 years in post.

1972–1973 – Acting Head: Miss Wright (1 year)

  • Miss Wright serves as Acting Headmistress.
  • Number on roll 75.

1973 – New Permanent Headteacher-Mr John Clemerson

  • Mr John Clemerson appointed headteacher.
  • Number on roll 110.

1990 – Leadership Transition-Mr Wakes

  • Mr Clemerson retires; Mr Wakes becomes headteacher.

1993 – New Headteacher: Mrs Sylvia West

  • Mrs Sylvia West appointed; serves until 2012.
  • Number on roll 191.
  • OFSTED rated outstanding-November 2011.

2012 – Present Headteacher: Mr Len Batey

  • Len Batey appointed headteacher, September 2012.
  • Number on roll 241.
  • Global Pandemic: 20th March 2020, closed the school. Stayed open to serve 'Key Worker families.'  School re-opened fully September 2021.
  • OFSTED rated outstanding in all 5 areas-November 2024.
  • School continues to modernise while maintaining its Christian ethos.
