Reception Letters and Sounds

This week’s letters are...
and

Everyday, name each letter (as you hear it in the alphabet song) and say the sound it makes (phoneme).

To make the phoneme for the letter ‘w’

To make the phoneme for the letter 'x'

Can you find these new letters in the alphabet? Where are they? Are they next to a letter you already know? Look at the letter 'w' Can you close your eyes and write it in the air? Look at the letter again, did you write it correctly? Have another go, the try with the letter 'x'.

Tuesday: Outside idea:

Write the letters in chalk on to the patio or on a wall/fence and trace over each letter with water and a paint brush. You could write lots of different letters (especially any your child is struggling to remember).

Indoor idea: click here to play an online game called 'Dragon's Den'. Click on 'Phase 3' and choose words sets including letters 'w' and/or 'x'.

Wednesday: Write each letter over and over again. Pour a little flour on to a coloured surface (e.g. blue dinner plate, a green tray) and use your finger to write each letter. Can you begin to write any words using this week's phonemes? Look at the pictures at the top of this page to help you think of words.

Thursday: Use your school letter pack to think make some words using the sound tiles you have so far (c s a p t i n m d g o k ck e u r h b f, ff, l, ll, ss, j, v, w, x) What words can you make? (e.g. fan, flan, bop, bet, get, tent, cot, tock, dock, mat, sad, am, as, it, tin, pin, sat, cat, can, pit, etc).

Friday: Draw or paint something that has each sound in it. It does not have to be at the beginning of the word, it could be at the end. Can you label your picture? Ask an adult to help you, if you are not sure how to write the letter ask the adult to write it for you and you can copy over the top of it
