Spellings

Your spellings for the week are:

boy, toy, joy, enjoy, annoy, girl, bird, sir, third, twirl

 

If your child usually has five spellings, please focus on the highlighted ones.

Monday

First of all, can you remember what sound these digraphs make?  Tell your grown up.

We already know the grapheme for /oi/.  Can you read the words below?

 

coin           soil         foil           joint           ointment

 

Watch this video of Mr Thorne to find a new way to spell the /oi/ sound.  Now, have a go at reading the words on this poster by using your segmenting and blending skills. 

Tuesday

First of all, can you remember what sound these digraphs make?  Tell your grown up.

You will need a piece of paper and a pencil, or a special pen for this next activity.  Listen carefully to the words and try to use the new /oy/ grapheme to spell them.  Good luck!   boy, toy, joy, enjoy & Oyster.

Listen to the sounds and write what they look like.  Did you remember them all?  Well done!

We are now going to learn a different spelling for /er/.   Watch this video to find out what it is. 

 Pause the short animation when a word comes up.  Ask your child to segment and blend each sound to read the word.  Are they able to read the new grapheme in words?  Then read words with /ir/ in by using this game on Phonics Play - select Phase 5 (ir).
